Research Overview

Erin L Dolan, Biochem; Fralin Biotechnology Center research laboratory The Fralin Life Science Institute fosters cutting edge, interdisciplinary research by providing high quality laboratory space, services, and equipment to eight faculty representing three departments and two different colleges. Resources include the Fralin Imaging Facility, and a pilot-scale fermentation facility. Fralin's eight resident research faculty run active well funded research programs.

Fermentation & Protein Purification Facility

The Fralin fermentation facility contains equipment in support of research campus-wide where there is a need to grow large quantities of plants, microbes or animal cells under controlled conditions. The facility includes centrifuges and spectrophotometer generously donated by the Beckman Corporation. The fermentation facility equipment includes:

  • 150 liter W.B. Moore fermentor
  • 35 liter New Brunswick fermentor
  • Two 10 liter Beckman BioFlo 2000 fermentors
  • A/G Technology Corporation Grandstand Pilot/Process System (cell separation)
  • Beckman J6-HC Centrifuge
  • Sorvall RC5B Plus
