BIOTECH-IN-A-BOX

What is it? Biotech-in-a-Box is a program that provides biotechnology equipment and materials to Virginia classrooms.

What kits are available?

    DNA Biotechnology Kit

  • Students perform a DNA fingerprinting experiment to solve a crime! Manual includes scenarios for the classroom.
  • Use to teach concepts in genetics and problem-solving.
  • Kit contents (see below)
  • Request form for DNA Biotechnology Kit (see below)
  • Middle school teacher? DNA Demo Kit available. Ask for information.
    Protein Biotechnology Kit

  • Students examine proteins using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Manual includes classroom approaches for asking evolutionary questions, solving a food mystery, and comparing gene expression from different organs and tissues.
  • Use to teach concepts in evolution, genetics, and problem-solving.
  • Kit contents (see below)

    Introduction to Immunology Kit

  • Students exchange “bodily fluids” (simulated) and then trace the spread of disease through their classroom using an ELISA assay. Manual includes scenarios.
  • Use to teach concepts in epidemiology and immunology.
  • Kit contents (see below)
  • Request form for Introduction to Immunology Kit (see below)
    Column Chromatography Kit

  • Students separate molecules by charge, size, and polarity. Manual includes a scenario for finding pollutants in groundwater.
  • Use in chemistry and biology classes to teach about molecular characteristics.
  • Kit contents (see below)
  • Request form for Chromatography Kit (see below)
      Thermal Cycler

    • Used for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This is just the instrument, not a kit.
    • PCR kit must be purchased separately.

      Who is eligible to borrow?

    • Virginia high school and community college educators. Virginia middle school teachers (Immunology and Demo DNA Kits only).
      How long are the loans?

    • The loans are for two weeks. The kits are shipped on Thursday for delivery on the following Monday, and must be sent back two weeks later. The Immunology Kit is sent on Monday for delivery on Tuesday, and may be kept for three weeks.
      What does it cost?

    • There is no charge for Biotech-in-a-Box, and the Fralin Biotechnology Center pays round-trip shipping. All materials (except for several grocery store items) are included in the kits.
